Rio de janeiro
Tio Lino (named in remembrance of a community activist) is a community centre located in Rocinha Favela in Rio de Janeiro. This is where ACE will be starting its journey. Rocinha Favela is the largest favela in Latin America; home to at least 250,000 residents.
For all these residents, there are only two state schools. As demand is high and funding low, a child is offered (if accepted) 4 hours of education a day, often from under-qualified and underpaid staff. This leaves extended periods of time when children are at home without supervision, leading to involvement in negative activities, principally, the pressure to join the local drug gangs that control the favelas. While walking through Rocinha, it is not uncommon to encounter teenagers as young as 12/13 years old on the street corners. In the past 6 months, violence in the community has greatly increased due to police operations. The current situation has lead to many deaths and a surge in gang recruiting as they try to replace the traffickers who have died.
Tio Lino will offer a safe community for kids to grow and develop, providing a small oasis from the realities of the community. The school will be focusing on art, education, sport, and therapy, with each project offered specifically to Rocinha and the community needs; as deemed important by our local staff.
